Why filter water that has already been treated?
Contaminants: In most urban areas Councils treat the water with chlorine - a powerful bleach even in minute quantities - to destroy harmful organic matter. This process produces a wide range of chemical by-products, including Tri-halo-methanes (THM's), that are known carcinogens. Unlike chlorine, most are odourless and undetectable without a scientific test. The council try to maintain a chlorine level of 1.0 ppm (part per million) at the furthest location from the treatment station. This means that a much higher level can be present in mains water closer to the treatment station. When the water reaches your home, chlorine (nor the by-products) are no longer required.
Damaging Dirt: Even though the water is filtered at the treatment station, it usually contains a lot of fine sediments and dirt that comes from the pipes and especially through maintenance to the town supply. This grit and dirt can contain heavy metals and also hard grit that will damage ceramic mixers and other sensitive appliances, like coffee machines, dishwashers, washing machines etc. We see sediment filters in Tauranga city that are black after 8 months of average usage.
